What first drew you to science, fisheries, or the ocean?
The ocean has always made me feel peaceful and happy and I have always been curious about “what lies beneath the ocean”
Are there any aspects of your work that makes you feel proud or hopeful? e.g a species, ecosystem, community, or breakthrough that keeps you going?
The naming of a new deep sea giant tube worm (lamellibrachia judigobini) is a crowning achievement as it signified recognition of my significant contributions to marine science.
What are some of the most significant challenges women or girls face in science in your context?
There are still not enough marine scientific opportunities and jobs to support girls and women pursuing marine science nationally and regionally.
What support, opportunities, or conditions have helped you (or others) succeed despite these challenges?
Fortunately for me I have enjoyed amazing collaborations, support and mentorship from some incredible international women scientists!
What is one way organizations like GCFI could help women and girls feel more welcome, supported, or visible in fisheries and marine science?
GCFI must expand into the numerous areas of marine sciences (oceanography, marine ecosystems including the deep sea) and encourage and support by initiating: mentorship programs, match-making (pairing with senior scientists), foster collaborations, create opportunities (internships, training opportunities) and improved communications with respect to existing opportunities in marine sciences- for young girls and women.
Is there a woman in science, locally or globally, whose story has inspired you?
Prof. Patricia Miloslavich (Snr. Scientist Australian Antarctic Division) continues to be my main inspiration in marine science. This incredible woman continues to contribute globally and is a very well respected scientist. She is originally from Simon Bolivar University, Venezuela and has faced numerous challenges and obstacles, but she triumphed!
What message would you share with girls considering a career in science or fisheries, especially those who may doubt they belong?
Follow your passion; what inspires you, what makes you happy and where is your ideal “job”? These all help you to focus and do remember that it is not “just about science” there are numerous other marine-related careers and jobs (photography/videography, journalism/communications, policy and legal etc.)
