Karen Fuentes: Director and Founder Manta Caribbean Project, Mexican Caribbean

What first drew you to science, fisheries, or the ocean?

A giant manta ray! I previously worked with marine environments such as reefs and in land in the Mayan forest. When I saw my first manta ray in the open ocean, my life changed, and I decided to start my own non profit organization to study and protect them in my country.

What part of your work makes you feel proud or hopeful?

Community has been crucial, the massive work behind the scenes this includes my team their commitment with conservation, and I see hope that some people will continue our legacyprotecting mantas, and everyone that has supported our work from day 1, even when I didn’t believe I could keep going.

What are some of the most significant challenges women or girls face in science in your context?

I have been lucky to have encountered amazing mentors, teachers, and guidance from the beginning of my marine conservation journey. The main challenge I think is to keep going for others in the future, we have to keep showing up, being consistent and disciplin with ourselves. Ego doesn’t win and it’s not important.

What support, opportunities, or conditions have helped you (or others) succeed despite these challenges?

Networking, I always tell my younger students to connect and communicate, now tech allow us to contact almost everyone, send that email! Languages are important on this field, and the most important asset is to be respectful that open doors everywhere.

Is there a woman in science, locally or globally, whose story has inspired you?

I admire all my colleagues I can’t just mention one, all of them inspire me, I like to be surrounded by like minded people with love and respect for nature and empathy for humans.

What message would you share with girls considering a career in science or fisheries, especially those who may doubt they belong?

Have confidence every person has something different or special to bring to the table, never stop trying, your personality, truth and effort can’t be taken from you! Believe in your dreams and work for them.
