What first drew you to science, fisheries, or the ocean?
I’ve always loved the ocean from growing up on the beaches of Cornwall in the UK. It was while travelling the world and learning to scuba dive that unlocked the underwater world and where my passion for protecting coral reefs began. I was witnessing first hand the negative human impacts destroying these precious ecosystems and became determined to help play my part in protecting them.
What part of your work makes you feel proud or hopeful?
On an ecological level I have felt proud when coral restoration sites have naturally spawned from nursery reared corals I have planted and it makes me hopeful for the thousands of corals out there that there is hope they will adapt to their ever changing environment. On a social level I feel inspired by the women I have trained over the years whether in the diving industry or coral restoration sector and am proud of the paths many of them have taken to begin their journey in educating and encouraging others to become a part of recovering and enjoying our ocean environment.
What are some of the most significant challenges women or girls face in science in your context?
I believe one of the significant challenges for women is not necessarily entering the field but in being encouraged and supported to excel once within a role. Senior roles and top salaries are still the main domain of our male counterparts and this needs to be addressed and for women to stopped being overlooked.
What support, opportunities, or conditions have helped you succeed?
In my early career days it definitely helped to volunteer and network as much as possible. Although often unpaid these roles allowed me to gain valuable experience and make connections with people who eventually assisted me in my path to paid conservation work.
What message would you share with girls considering a career in science or fisheries, especially those who may doubt they belong?
Your curiosity, determination, and voice can help shape the future of our oceans, and a career in marine science gives you the power to make a real, lasting difference for marine life and communities around the world. Many women already work within the field ready to encourage and support you so go for it!
