
The Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) mourns the passing of Dr. Jim Franks of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, a respected fisheries scientist, mentor, and longtime member of the GCFI community. He served as Chair of the GCFI Board of Directors (2011–2013) and as Chair of the Ronald Schmied Scholarship Committee, where he was deeply committed to supporting students and early-career professionals.
Dr. Franks made significant contributions to the study and management of pelagic species such as cobia, tunas, and billfishes in the Gulf of Mexico. Known for his collaborative spirit and hands-on research approach, he also mentored generations of scientists and fostered strong regional partnerships. He is remembered not only for his scientific achievements but for his generosity, leadership, and lasting impact on the fisheries community.
