Krista Sherman: Senior Scientist at the Perry Institute for Marine Science

What first drew you to science, fisheries, or the ocean?

I was born and raised in The Bahamas and my parents introduced me to the ocean as a baby. I’ve always loved the ocean and feel extremely comfortable in the water. My love for the ocean, curiosity about marine life and interest in science drew me to a career in marine science. I realized this path mattered to me the first time I went snorkeling.

What part of your work makes you feel proud or hopeful?

All of my research has an applied conservation focus and has been used to inform and advocate for effective management of marine species and habitats. To date, I have led the development of two species management plans, multiple rapid ecological assessments of critical habitats & MPAs throughout The Bahamas, stock assessments of traditional, recreational, and emerging fishery species, and research on fish spawning aggregations. More recently I also co-founded The Bahamas Academy of Sciences (a Bahamian registered non-profit organization), which aims to recognize and promote excellence in science and its use in decision-making processes that contribute to national development and growth.

What support, opportunities, or conditions have helped you (or others) succeed despite these challenges?

Collaborating with other scientists and learning to work with a diverse group of people has been instrumental to my professional development and success in science.

What is one way organizations like GCFI could help women and girls feel more welcome, supported, or visible in fisheries and marine science?

GCFI can help women and girls feel more welcome, supported, or visible in fisheries and marine science by continuing to share opportunities for internships, jobs, training and networking workshops and highlighting success stories or major accomplishments.

What message would you share with girls considering a career in science or fisheries, especially those who may doubt they belong?

Everyone has a different path or journey. Embrace yours and surround yourself with people who are truly supportive to help you navigate through the highs and lows.
