Andreina Valdez Trinidad: Operations Manager at FUNDEMAR (Dominican Republic)

What first drew you to science, fisheries, or the ocean?

I always enjoyed watching documentaries of marine life and wildlife that’s when I knew I wanted to work with sharks but when I went freediving for the first time I realised I wanted to pursue marine science in general

What part of your work makes you feel proud or hopeful?

When I see the impact that we make helping communities and ecosystems

What are some of the most significant challenges women or girls face in science in your context?

We have less chance of having a successful career and a family, the system make you think you can have both but at some point it’s not

What support, opportunities, or conditions have helped you (or others) succeed despite these challenges?

Volunteering programs because you can learn a lot and can make some connections

What message would you share with girls considering a career in science or fisheries, especially those who may doubt they belong?

There is room for everyone and every idea!
