In 1997, GCFI, together with the Caribbean Fisheries management Council, began offering an Outstanding Student Award for Academic Achievement. The award was granted to the best student oral or poster presentation and paid transportation to the subsequent GCFI. Beginning in 2003, two additional Outstanding Student Awards were funded with support for one award from the Puerto Rico Sea Grant Program and the other award supported by a consortium including the Florida Sea Grant program and the Mississippi/Alabama Sea Grant consortium. Two awards are now offered each year for the best presentations.
GCFI is now offering two travel awards of $750 US for travel to the GCFI meeting during the same year that the award is given. One award will be given to a student from the Latin America Caribbean Region and another to a student at a U.S. educational institution. A check will be given to the recipient at the meeting. An endowed scholarship fund in Ron's name will support graduate student travel to the annual meeting of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute. Because of Ron's interest in and dedication to sustainable marine recreational fisheries, students with a social, economic, biological, ecological, or management perspective on recreational fisheries will be eligible to apply for the travel scholarship. Each scholarship will cover the costs of airfare, lodging, and meals to attend the GCFI annual meeting. Selection of awardees will be based on the level of achievement, innovation, and promise demonstrated in abstracts submitted for the annual meeting as well as a vita and statement of career goals in fisheries management.
