A one-day symposium (Wednesday November 7) dedicated to presentations and discussions pertaining to the responsible use of the spiny lobster resource in the Caribbean region and sponsored by the Seafood Science and TechnologySociety of the Americas (SST), The NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service International Programs, and GCFI. The morning Special Session will be convened as a joint
session of the 60th Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute, November 6-9, 2007 and the 31st annual meeting of the SST. The purpose of these activities is to share and integrate current research on the biology and management of spiny lobsters with regulatory, marketing, trade, and processing practices to promote responsible and sustainable use of the resource. The morning Special Session will include scientific and technical presentations and the afternoon session workshop will include lectures and hands on demonstrations to address handling and processing practices that promote responsible use of the resource, regulatory measures used to detain illegal, decomposed, and fraudulent lobster products.
This activity will include both invited speakers, contributed oral presentations, and an open panel discussion. Submission of contributed oral presentations are now being accepted. Oral presentations are i
nvited concerning any Caribbean spiny lobsters topic, but priority will be given to Caribbean spiny lobster fishery management, country specific issues and fishery updates, import and export regulations, marketing, handling and processing, and detection of decomposed or fraudulent lobster products. Symposium presenters are encouraged to submit manuscripts for publication in the Proceedings of the Gulf and Caribbean Research Institute.
