OBJECTIVES

Remote sensing by satellite or deployment of field instrumentation at remote sites is becoming an essential tool in regional environmental assessments and for understanding connectivity between and among coastal, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems. This introductory workshop will address how satellite remote sensing can be applied in management of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) and to assess processes that lead to environmental connectivity. The discussion will include examples of river plumes, currents, and implications of global change for region. The workshop will serve as a starting point to explore new tools and partnerships among people working in the region.

We will cover basic principles of remote sensing, provide basic training in use of some of the data, and discuss availability of imagery for the wider Caribbean region. Each presentation will include examples of how these technologies have been applied. The instructors will also seek to understand the needs of resource managers to make full use of synoptic/connectivity assessment tools to assist in management of MPAs. Participants are encouraged to come prepared to discuss requirements for possible applications with the presenters as a basis for new partnerships.

The language of presentations will be English with simultaneous translations to Spanish.] Due to limited computing resources, participation is limited. To request participation in the workshop, email the organizers.
