SPECIAL SOCIO-ECONOMICS SESSION ON CO-MANAGEMENT

Background

The 56th Annual Meeting of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute (GCFI) will be held in Tortola, BVI, from 10-14 November 2003. The Centre for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) of the University of the West Indies (UWI) at Cave Hill in Barbados will be hosting a special socio-economics session on coastal and marine resource co-management. Participants at previous GCFI meetings have shown much interest in the topic.

The objectives of the session are to exchange information on coastal and marine resource co-management in the Caribbean, to highlight the research being done on it, to share what lessons we have learnt so far, and to present ideas for future research and development.

 Proposed program

CERMES is involved in co-management research and demonstration projects funded by the Oak Foundation and the UK Department for International Development (DfID) Natural Resource Systems Programme (NRSP). Research partners will share information on these projects. We are also inviting other researchers, including graduate students, to share their findings and ideas.

This special session will consist of a keynote address followed by papers presented on the topic. Each oral presentation and the paper submitted to be published in the GCFI Proceedings should follow the guidelines and format set out by the GCFI for presenters and authors (see web site).

Abstracts

Because of the need to provide diversity in the perspectives, geographic representation and lessons learned in this session, authors interested in presenting are requested to submit their abstracts early to abstracts@gcfi.org, and to confirm their participation in the meeting. Papers should clearly identify the issues, framework of analysis, stakeholders involved and lessons learned even if the research is a work in progress. Comparative analyses are encouraged.

Contact the session organizer below for further information, to register interest in participating or to provide a copy of your abstract for feedback. Submission or acceptance of an abstract does not guarantee that participation will be sponsored, but efforts will be made to assist those in genuine need on a first-come/first-served basis provided that the criteria outlined above are met.
